Kandinsky

I am currently working on a new book for Search Press. In this I explore some well known twentieth century artists, looking at their subject matter and how they interpret it in painting. I am adapting my own themes and images and translating these into stitch.
The book is to be published later this year. As soon as I have the exact date, I will post.

Contemporary Stitch Workshop

The contemporary Stitch Workshop met last weekend for the first time this year. We have a new theme that will extend across the next two years – ‘Land Marks’.

We had planned to go out to the beach to collect inspiration to work on but the weather was wet and cold so we remained in the hall where the group considered three possible pathways through the new theme:

looking at the marks and symbols used to describe features on maps,

analysing an Ordnance survey map and adding imagery to it perhaps to tell a story,

and using the networks found on maps.

They were asked to bring maps to work with and to cut up and some very interesting approaches began to emerge.

Ros and I were delighted with the response and engagement with this new theme and look forward to seeing the developments in due course.

Work is being completed for our forthcoming exhibition entitled ‘Heads and Tales” at Birdwood House, Totnes on July 20th-27th.ImageImageImage

Wire frames

20130215-141415.jpgThese wire frames are available in three sizes, 120 x 120mm, 120 x 180 mm, 180 x 180mm. They are very versatile, you can wind thread onto them and then stitch into it to create original fabric, working by hand or machine. You can use thread that is difficult to pass through fabric in the normal way. It may be stubby or textured or just too thick, or it may be fragile and easily broken. Open lacey fabrics or densely stitched fabrics can be made. The resulting fabric can be applied to another fabric or cut and pieced as fragments.
Frames cost £4, £4.50, and £5. a set of three, one of each size costs £10.50.

Personal Statement

Janet Edmonds works in three dimensions, exploring manipulated fabric in a variety of ways. Ideas and inspiration are drawn from Nature’s structures and rhythms, the overlay of time, memory and the accumulation of information. Time erodes physical material, wearing away surface and detail, leaving behind a trace of what has gone before but with an experience that accumulates and expands.

This collection of stones represents a network of connections across time. Individually, each one is a stored memory with a separate experience, but together, they express a labyrinth of collective memory.
