From Art to Stitch
I am currently working on a new book for Search Press. In this I explore some well known twentieth century artists, looking at their subject matter and how they interpret it in painting. I am adapting my own themes and images and translating these into stitch.
The book is to be published later this year. As soon as I have the exact date, I will post.
Inspired by Georgio Morandi
My summer school at Missenden Abbey this year was about making a small panel inspired by the Italian artist Georgio Morandi. His colour palette is neutral, soft chalky colours, greys, browns, cream and rust.
We explored surface using gesso and scrims onto paper and fabric. Our stitch techniques were based on those used in stump work, detatched buttonhole and needleweaving, with some padding and working with fine threads.
i am doing the same workshop in November 14/16th for Anglia Leisure learning at Hillscourt, Rednal, south Birmingham. Details from Liza Jones info@anglialeisurelearning.co.uk

Contemporary Stitch Workshop
The contemporary Stitch Workshop met last weekend for the first time this year. We have a new theme that will extend across the next two years – ‘Land Marks’.
We had planned to go out to the beach to collect inspiration to work on but the weather was wet and cold so we remained in the hall where the group considered three possible pathways through the new theme:
looking at the marks and symbols used to describe features on maps,
analysing an Ordnance survey map and adding imagery to it perhaps to tell a story,
and using the networks found on maps.
They were asked to bring maps to work with and to cut up and some very interesting approaches began to emerge.
Ros and I were delighted with the response and engagement with this new theme and look forward to seeing the developments in due course.
Work is being completed for our forthcoming exhibition entitled ‘Heads and Tales” at Birdwood House, Totnes on July 20th-27th.

Craft4crafters
I have just done this show in Exeter. It was a great space and although visitor numbers were not great, many people showed interest in my books, printing methods and stitching onto metal frames, of which more later. The weather was cold but not as cold as home and we had rain instead of snow which was a lot more manageable.
